Social projects Santa Felisa Paula Cruz is one of those women that stand out. Her smile struggles its way out from a world where opportunity is hard to find. She started working in Santa Felisa in 2010, managing five different programs at the Association for the Development of Parraxaj (ADESPA) a village located in Acatenango. “I came to this farm just to visit a friend. Then I found out about ADESPA and I liked the project so I decided to move from Huehuetenango to Parraxaj, a village of Acatenango”, she explained happy about her decision. ADESPA was founded in 2004, supported by Coffee Kids, with the objective of providing alternative income to women living and working in the farm or in communities nearby. Santa Felisa sponsors the association with cash for basic needs in the programs, while Coffee Kids sponsors the nursery and health program for children and mothers. The association focuses on preventive health and education for their members and specifically develops and administers a bakery, textile manufacture, nursery and shoe store. Paula is now the coordinator of the nursery where a total of 30 children are assisted. “This is my favorite project, because children are offered a place where they can learn, they can play and they can be taken care off while their mothers work in different places”. Her satisfaction begins with achieving personal goals. “I had a brain surgery to remove a tumor. I thought I was not going to be useful anymore. But here, I have learned that I can succeed despite adversity. Here I have found that I can still motivate others through my own satisfaction in life”, she concluded. Highlights of social responsibility - No child labor. - Coffee Kids helps provide trainings on Mayan handicrafts and shoe store for women living in the farm and nearby. - Donation to the local government for the construction of an elementary school. - Promotion of sustainability with social responsibility.
